18. KYOTO - THE WAY OF TEA

Monday March 4, 2013, continued

Having thoroughly enjoyed a matcha or green tea in a beautiful teahouse on our very first weekend in Japan, we now wanted to experience an actual tea ceremony. Alexandra found Tea Ceremony En on the Internet.

That being said, it was rather difficult to find and when we did find it up a tiny lane, the outside was underwhelming... But the outside didn't matter.

Befor she began, our host explained the 4 principles behind the ceremony. "WA-KEI-SEI-JAKU" (harmony, respect, purity and tranquility)

During the ceremony no words were spoken.

Symbolic cleaning of the already utensils.

Perhaps this fastidious attitude to cleaning goes some of the way to explaining why Japan is one of the cleanest country in the world.

The hostess serves the tea.

And then its our turn to whisk (70 times side to side) our own tea. Notice the sweet that is eaten before the slightly bitter tea is drunk.

Experts... Not...
