Here is another one of those things we love about New York City. THE HIGH LINE. It's a MUST MUST do in NYC! Take a rusty abandond old industrial elevated train line, throw in some architects, landscape architects, and who knows how many millions of dollars and .... There it is... The High Line. A public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. It opened in 2009. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 30th Streets in Chelsea.
We walked from the south to the north.
THE HISTORY FROM WIKIPEDIA: The High Line opened to trains in 1934. It originally ran from 34th Street to St. John's Park Terminal, at Spring Street. It was designed to go through the center of blocks, rather than over the avenue, to avoid the drawbacks of elevated trains. It connected directly to factories and warehouses, allowing trains to roll right inside buildings. Milk, meat, produce, and raw and manufactured goods could be transported and unloaded without disturbing traffic on the streets. This also reduced pilferage for the Bell Laboratories Building, now the Westbeth Artists Community, and the Nabisco plant, now Chelsea Market, which were served from protected sidings within the structures.
A small ice skating rink below the south end of the line. Whetting Alexandra's appetite for skating in Central Park next weekend.
The 20 storey Standard Hotel straddles the High Line. Built in 2009 but definitely has that mod 1950s International architectural style.
It's about 3 degrees Celsius but warm in the sunlight...
All along the route you get these glimpses across the island.
The Hudson River through these groovy plants.
Ok, so the plants are brown but that's northern hemisphere winter for you...
The Empire State peeking over
Look into the apartments as you walk by
So that's the high line.

Oh bruno and I really want to do this when we go in July 2013. Thanks for sharing, we wouldn't have known about it.
