9. THE KINGDOM OF CAMBODIA STARTING WITH SIEM REAP

TRAVELING IN STYLE; We flew into Cambodia's Siem Reap international Airport, quite nice architecture too as far as airports go. Checked into a good little $10 Golden Orange Hotel and then jumped into a tuk-tuk to go to a silk farm.
Our room, great value for money... Now, what to eat for lunch???

Perhaps some crickets?

Maybe locusts are your preference?

No thanx, I'm having spiders for lunch
What we actually had. Great Local cuisine, Amok (curry), served in a coconut
That friendly beetle-nut smile, who can resist it? This is the granny at the hotel, the only one who really knows what going on...

Now, we have seen a few different types of budget Asian transport over the years from Philippino jeepneys and tricycles (motorbike with a roofed side car cobbled on) to Indonesian baji, to those overpriced cyclos in Vietnam... but I must say, we are most impressed with the Cambodian tuk-tuk. Take one old motorbike, fashion a simple pivot bracket with a padlock bolt at the back of the seat, and hook up a quaint little roofed buggy, big enough for 4 people or 2 people with back packs and "voila". Your on the road in comfort and style.

ANKOR SILK FARM; Did you know??? Raw silk is the outer part of the cocoon, whereas, fine silk is the inner part.
Silk worms eating for 3 days
Silk worms doing what they do, cocooning, little do they know what lays in store for them
Unraveling and extracting the silk thread
Silk worms in a spot of hot water
Weaving the silk
The finished product. For the well to do. Apparently, the king doesn't have to worry about what colour to wear tomorrow. Monday it's red, Tuesday it's orange, then blue, then......

SATANS FAVORITE GAME - THE NEVER ENDING WAR; Despite ongoing land-mine removal program, Cambodians continue to fall victim to this deadly plague. In 2011, leftover landmines and other unexploded ordnance killed or injured close to 200 people. Its estimated that there may be as many as 4 to 6 million mines and unexploded ordnances in Cambodia that will take at least 10 to 20 more years to clear all the mines at their current rate of progress.

The mines

Sign of the times

Needs a good beating (Isaiah 2:4)

The civil war "museum", or a paddock full of once delaying rubbish

THE NIGHT MARKET; Seems, every Asian city has a night market, a combination of tourist souvenir stuff and local produce. This one seems heavily weighted to the tourists.

The night market

3 little Khmer princesses

At the night market you can enjoy Cambodia's endangered animals, well, buy bits of them if you like that kind of thing... Tiger teeth anyone?
THE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP; $2 for a Dr Fish Massage... with a beer thrown in for free... Who could possibly refuse? Well, Alexandra for one... The fish didn't seem to mind that i had been walking around the dusty streets all day either... A weird sensation but I'll do it again if I get the opportunity...
What happens if i fall in?
Feeding the multitude

Love-you-bye
