USA 38. CHICAGO RIVER ARCHITECTURAL TOUR.

Monday, September 22, 2014 continued

Here we are with our fab friend and guide, Amanda. We are about to do an unpaid add for Wendella Boat Tours.

According to their website; Wendella Sightseeing Boats is Chicago's Original Architecture Tour, offering a variety of tours focusing on Chicago's rich architectural heritage and history.

Our tour began at the dock (obviously) and went up all 3 legs of the Chicago River.

The Wendella Dock at Michigan Avenue. Towering behind the dock is the 1921 Wrigley Building. As the name suggests, it was commissioned by the chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr. to headquarters his gum company. That's right, "chewing gum magnate".

Looking east, from the dock down river toward Lake Michigan.

Trump International Hotel and Tower designed by architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Trump announced in 2001 that the skyscraper would become the tallest building in the world, but after the September 11 attacks that same year, he scaled back the building's plans, and its design underwent several revisions. When topped out in 2009, it became the second-tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, after another Chicago building, the Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower).

Not a big fan of skyscrapers but impressive none the less.

330 North Wabash, the formerly IBM Plaza also known as IBM Building and now renamed AMA Plaza. Deigned by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe who died in 1969 before construction began.

... corn cobs for some reason?

When it opened in 1930, the Merchandise Mart was the largest building in the world, with 4,000,000 square feet (372,000 m2) of floor space. This art deco landmark was owned for over half a century by the Kennedy family. It is so large that it has its own zip code.

The 1929 Art Deco, The Civic Opera House.

The Willis Tower, built as and still commonly referred to as Sears Tower, is a 108-storey, was the tallest in the world from 1973 to 1998.

Happy cruisers.

The whole cruise was accompanied by a comedic but informative commentary.

Raised bridge.

The 1980 The Boeing International Headquarters.

River City Condominiums.

Old warehouses gentrifying.

The Lake Point Tower is a residential tower completed in 1968. The building is noticeably not within the cluster of other buildings as it is the only skyscraper east of lake shore drive.

It was inspired by Mies van der Rohe’s 1922 design for a glass-curtained skyscraper in Berlin. Due to the location of the 70 storey apartment building’s location, right next to the lake, it had to be built to withstand the high winds.

1925 neo-Gothic building Tribune Tower.

Following the cruise Amanda left us and we headed off to our next adventure... What could it be?
