18. ONAMICHI WALKING TOUR

Monday December 2nd, 2013
A new day and we are on the road again, this time to Onomichi City.
Our friends taking us to the train station.
By Shinkansen and local train it's just a short trip.
Onomichi is a city of temples, Buddhist and Shinto, facing the Seto Inland Sea. This is the stone gate of the Jikoji temple.

The view from the top of the hill.

In the middle of our walk we were met by Hayato, a young brother from a local congregation. Unbeknown to us, he had been asked to accompany us around the town. Turns out he had been all over the place asking people if they had seen a foreign couple. Interestingly, we saw very few foreign tourists in town. Never-the-less, this is no small town and we were wending our way randomly through a maze of narrow backstreets so it was a small miracle that he found us at all. So he joins us for an hour an a half.
Hayato bought us a delicious local delicacy, waffles.
This is the Onomichi City Museum of Art designed by Tadao Ando in 2003.
Unfortunately, it was closed.

Back down the hill.
For the cat lovers.
The "Path of Cats" is a narrow lane where we saw both living cats and "fukuishineko", a bunch of large and small painted stones cats.

Hondori shopping district is a 1.6 kilometer long classic Japanese covered shopping arcade full of wide variety of shops such as ramen shops, Onomichi yaki shops, old-fashioned coffee shops, souvenir shops of Onomichi Hanpu (canvas) and many more.

This is a corridor wide alley off the arcade that we just had to trespass into...

And to finish the day, you guessed it, we were once again invited to stay with some new Japanese friends that we have never met before. And we were spoiled with yet another banquet if delicious Japanese food... No wonder we are getting so fat...
From front: Mikiko, Nobue and our hosts, Chiyoko and Koshi.

And here is our newest best friend, Dohi who is going to take us out tomorrow...
