NEPAL 8. THE SARANGKOT TREK

Friday April 18, 2014

From the roof of our hotel I observed the sunrise in the hopes of seeing the Annapurna mountain range, part of the Himalayas.

The Annapurna range is only about 28 km (linear distance) away from the lake.

Majestic birds of prey fly silently by, eagles I think.

The hill in the middle of the shot, Sarangkot, was our little objective for the day. The plan, find a taxi to take us 2 thirds the way up, then walk to the top to see the mountains, then walk down to the lake and back to the hotel...
If you look very closely you can just see Annapurna I to the left and to the right, (and even fainter) the beautiful Machapuchare, also known in English as “Fish Tail Mountain.

Annapurna I to the left

Machapuchare or Fish Tail Mountain almost visible in the background. Ok so this picture is not quie National Geograpic worthy... But hey, I actually saw the Himalayas for the first time with my own eyes...

Our taxi driver

Village home.

Village life.
Straining to see the mountains through the clouds.
The best little set of binoculars I ever owned. "Thank you Hajime and Arki". We are thinking of you and are sure you are enjoying Gilead.
We walk up the village path.
Past the amenities.
Looing back down to the lake.
It goes up and up.
The Royal Enfield, an Indian motorbike of some fame.
Just as we were getting a bit puffed out climbing the steps we met these young ladies carrying baskets full of gravel to a building site. Cannot be good for their necks but they are strong...
We are almost there... A very reasonable entry fee of about 35c.
Sadly, the view is broken...
But something else catches our eye. Can you see, floating there on the warm air?

Paragliders

It might be a thrill sport but...

It sure looks like a lot of fun

The locals was watching on.

Now for the walk down the hill to the lake and our hotel
This proud father sold us a beer in his little family business. Well actually a table, two chairs an advertising sign and a bar fridge...
Cheery little princess.
Another princess???
Having a bad hair day.

We met this 79 year old man walking up the path as we defended.

And another.
Almost to the lake.
Lunch stop, lemon pancakes and another beer. It was a very Hot day...
As you can see, this is a holy cow. Beef is not on the menus in Nepal as the Hindus consider it sacrilegious... That's good news for her...
But bad news for the water buffalo. The menu often says "buff".
Having a good soak in Phewa lake.
No longer sea-worthy.
Nor is he, so he has taken the precaution of a few flotation devices.

Washing women.

She ownes the store so she can sit on the counter if she wants!!!
Hindu culture is very colourful.

After a 5 hour long walk in the sun we headed back to the hotel to rest and recuperate... Not exactly "tracking" in the true Nepali sense but we enjoyed it. Tomorrow is another day...
